Overall ice coverage across Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron continues to be below normal for mid February. Ice coverage on Lake Erie continues to be well above normal as ice coverage is around 90%. The latest SAR imagery reveals the remaining 10% of "ice-free" area for Lake Erie residing on the northern shores of Ontario. A mix of medium to thick lake ice is present across the Straits of Mackinac, Green Bay, and Saginaw Bay with generally new to thin lake ice present along shorelines. Current ice coverage across all Great Lakes is roughly 26 percent. The entire Great Lakes region is expected to remain below freezing through the weekend. Modest east to northeast winds this evening will shift towards the northwest and west late Thursday into Friday, 20 to 30 knots. This could contribute to significant shifts in area of new to thin ice. Another system will impact the Great Lakes region this weekend, with much colder air expected to arrive towards the end of the weekend into early next week. This could contribute to areas of moderate to rapid ice growth, particularly across the Upper Great Lakes.
