Overall ice coverage across Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron continues to be slightly below normal for mid February. Ice coverage on Lake Erie continues to be well above normal as ice coverage is around 90 to 95%. The latest SAR imagery reveals the remaining 5 to 10% of "ice-free" area for Lake Erie residing on the northern shores of Ontario towards The Islands, resulting from strong westerly winds Thursday evening. A mix of medium to thick lake ice is present across the Straits of Mackinac, Green Bay, Saginaw Bay, and most recently, the eastern shoreline of Lake Erie. New to thin lake continues to appear and increase in coverage along the shorelines of all other Lakes. Current ice coverage across all Great Lakes is roughly 33 percent. The entire Great Lakes region is expected to remain below freezing through the weekend and into early next week. Modest north to northwest winds of 20 to 30 knots will return across much of the Great Lakes behind a deepening low pressure system Sunday into Monday which could contribute to significant shifts in the ice. Arctic air will arrive behind this system which could lead to areas of moderate to rapid ice growth, particularly across the Upper Great Lakes.
