Total ice concentration across the Great Lakes region is near 32% with above average concentration observed on Lake Erie with 90 to 95% ice covered. Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan all remain below average for total ice for this time of year. The highest concentration of ice across Lake Superior is isolated to the southern lakeshore, especially from Copper Harbor east to Sault Ste. Marie. Across Lake Michigan, ice concentration is greatest in Green Bay with additional ice coverage observed at the northern and southern tier of the lake. Lake Huron ice coverage is highest from Alpena and south, including a completely frozen Saginaw Bay. The entire region will remain below freezing with overnight lows dropping to near 0 degrees through Friday. This is expected to result in moderate ice growth with rapid ice growth expected across the northern portions of the region, including near Duluth, Green Bay, and Milwaukee. Temperatures return to near freezing for daytime highs this weekend. Modest north to northwest winds of 15 to 25 knots will accompany the arctic high pressure for much of this week, limiting the potential for any ice floes or shifting ice across the region.
