Ice coverage across the Great Lakes has decreased over the last few days due to temperatures warming across the region. Ice coverage across the lakes is now sitting at around 35%, just below average for this time of year. Currently, fast ice is present across much of all of the bays and along the shoreline in areas with shallow water depth. Lake Superior has ice coverage along much of its southern shore, with most of it being fast ice. Whitefish Bay has the highest concentration of fast ice within the northern lake. Keweenaw Bay east to Grand Island is primarily fast ice as well. Lake Michigan is primarily ice free in the open waters with ice lining the shoreline from Manitowoc south around the southern portion of the shoreline. Green Bay and areas from Little Traverse Bay, north into the Straights of Mackinac are fast ice. Ice coverage in Lake Huron has decreased recently with the only areas with fast ice being within the Saginaw Bay. The rest of the ice lining the western shoreline remains thin with less concentration. Lake Erie is the only lake that remains primarily ice covered despite the recent warm up. The majority of the lake is thinner ice with portion of the southern shoreline and areas just west of the islands in the western basin, having thicker ice. Fast ice is currently located just west of the islands and in the eastern basin from Sunset Bay east. Temperatures over the next few days will be stay above freezing for every lake, with the exception of portions of Lake Superior. This will cause ice growth to potential slow or even decay for the southern portions of the lakes. Winds will be primarily west-southwesterly with diminishing gusts throughout the night leading to ice shifting and consolidating to the eastern portions of the lake. Fast ice could weaken and break off as well due to the increased temperatures and winds over the next few days.
