Total ice coverage across the Great Lakes region is down to 25% with recent warmer weather and strong winds today. Fast ice remains in the usual late winter spots including Southwest Lake Superior around the Apostle Islands and Southeast Lake Superior and Whitefish Bay into the St. Mary's River and the SOO Locks. Fast ice remains in Green Bay and the Bays de Noc along with northern Lake Michigan into the Straits of Mackinac. Fast ice also is present in Saginaw Bay, Lake St. Clair, and the far western and eastern portions of Lake Erie. Low pressure departing the region will help cold air to return to the Great Lakes region. Canadian high pressure will build into the area through the weekend and sustained this colder air through Monday. Therefore, there should be some restorative ice growth on all lakes this weekend and even Monday with favorable temperatures and decreasing winds. High pressure will slide east and warmer air will return to the region on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ice will diminish on Tuesday and Wednesday with the warmer temperatures. Stronger winds over the lakes will move ice around the lakes on Wednesday.
