5 Day Ice Discussion...

Total ice coverage across the Great Lakes region is up slightly to 27%.

However, the distribution of ice across the region has changed with this

past weekend's low pressure system and strong winds. Large openings in the

ice have occurred on Lake Erie, western Lake St. Clair, and Green Bay.

Meanwhile, ice coverage has increased over Lake Superior with ice along

the entire southern shoreline. Otherwise, fast ice remains in the typical

spots for early March including Southwest Lake Superior around the

Apostle Islands and Southeast Lake Superior and Whitefish Bay into the St.

Mary's River and the SOO Locks. Fast ice remains in southern Green Bay

and the Bays de Noc along with northern Lake Michigan into the Straits of

Mackinac. Finally, fast ice also is present in Saginaw Bay, the eastern

two-thirds of Lake St. Clair, and the far eastern portions of Lake Erie.

A strong low pressure system will develop over the central Plains states

tonight and deepen significantly as it moves northeast toward the Great

Lakes. Temperatures ahead of this system on Tuesday and Wednesday will be

well above normal and winds will be strong, which will diminish ice

coverage and may cause significant breaks over the southern lakes. As the

low departs the region on Thursday, winds will shift to the northwest and

temperatures closer to normal will return. This will favor ice development

mainly over the northern lakes. Colder air will be reinforced from the

north toward the end of the week with high pressure and could maintain

decent conditions for ice growth in the northern lakes. Meanwhile, a low

pressure system will move through the Ohio Valley and could stir up a

little wind and more marginal temperatures to prohibit much new ice from

forming in the southern lakes late in the week.
