Ice continues to form over the southern third of Green Bay and parts of Big Bar DeNoc near Escanaba, Wisconsin. Ice has formed in Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior. Some ice has begun to form around the Sault Ste. Marie area on Lake Nicolet, Munuscongn Lake, and parts of the St. Marys River. Shore ice is starting to form along the shores of Saginaw Bay, Sandusky Bay, and along the south shores of Lake Superior. Much colder weather and below average temperatures are in the forecast through at least the next 5 days. An Arctic airmass will move over the Great Lakes Region this weekend through next week. There is the potential for rapid ice growth near the Apostle Islands and along the south shores of Lake Superior including around Duluth and Marquette. Ice will continue to expand on Saginaw Bay as well as portions of southern and northern Green Bay. There is medium confidence for ice formation in the western basin of Lake Erie around and west of the Lake Erie Islands this weekend. But shore ice will likely form along the western shores of Lake Erie this weekend into next week. A moderation of temperatures may briefly return to start next week but generally remain below freezing. Forecast guidance shows another strong push of Arctic air arriving towards the middle of next week so look for ice growth to accelerate and water temperatures to cool more quickly.
