With arctic air impacting the region the last couple days, ice coverage has become more expansive, especially across shallower waters with total ice coverage now at 23%. The bulk of ice coverage on Lake Superior remains confined to the southern lakeshore with most bays completely covered. Ice has begun to develop on the eastern and western shores of Lake Michigan with greatest ice coverage observed in Green Bay with expanding ice along the southern and northern shores. Across Lake Huron, the ice coverage has increased from Alpena MI south towards the St. Clair River. As of this forecast, Saginaw Bay and Lake St. Clair are completely frozen. Lake Erie has the most ice coverage with ice observed across the western and central basins with an opening only in the open waters of eastern basin. Moderate to rapid ice formation is expected during the next five days as surface temperatures over and near the lakes remain slightly below to near normal into this weekend. Surface winds are expected to average 15 to 25 knots. These winds may result in new ice shifting and potentially closing shipping channels on Lake Erie which has resulted in an Ice Advisory for the central and eastern basins.
