Ice continues to develop across the region with 26% of the Great Lakes covered with ice. Lake Erie has the most expansive ice coverage with only a small section of the open waters in the eastern basin still ice free. Elsewhere, the bulk of ice has been confined to the southern shorelines and within bays, inlets, and passageways. Currently, the entirety of Lake St. Clair remains frozen with thickening ice coverage extended from the mouth of the St. Clair River north to Alpena MI. Ice coverage increases again near the Straights of Mackinac and across northern Lake Michigan. The remainder of ice on Lake Michigan is confined to the southern lake shore and within Green Bay. Finally, across Lake Superior, the greatest concentration of ice extends from near Duluth MN east to Copper Harbor and within Whitefish Bay. Over the next five days, more seasonal high temperatures return to the area allowing for slow to moderate ice growth on all lakes. The best chance for moderate ice growth will be through the weekend before increased winds on Monday slow the growth. Possible near gale force winds from the southwest on Monday may result in ice shifting, increasing the potential for shipping lanes to close and ice floes to develop.
