Ice continues to cover 20% of the Great Lakes and will continue to develop across the region. Lake Erie has the most ice coverage across the Great Lakes with only a small portion of the lake east of the Pennsylvania/New York state line being ice free. For the rest of the lakes, the majority of ice coverage is located within bays and along the shoreline. Lake St. Clair, Saginaw Bay, and areas around Alpena, MI within Lake Huron have ice covering it's entirety. For Lake Michigan areas north of Sturgeon Bay, and west of Mackinaw City, MI, along with the southern portion of the Green Bay currently have fast ice. The St. Marys River and the lakes surrounding it, and the Chequamegon Bay all have complete ice coverage as well within Lake Superior. Over the next five days, there will be slow to moderate ice growth due to seasonally high temperatures on all of the lakes. There will be increased southwest winds through mid-week that will shift the ice and slow ice growth. There is currently a Gale Warning issued for all of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and portions of Lake Superior and Lake Erie. The Gale Warning is active until Monday night for Lakes Superior and Michigan and Tuesday morning for Lakes Huron and Erie. With the gale force winds there is the increase potential for shipping lanes to close and ice floes to develop.
