Issued at 348 AM CDT Sun May 11 2025 Hot, very dry, and breezy conditions will result in critical to near- critical fire weather conditions for today. Highs will climb to much above normal levels - in the upper 80s to lower 90s. This combined with afternoon dewpoints around 40 will yield RH values of 15 to 20 percent. Southerly winds will increase through the day, gusting 30 to 40 mph in the afternoon and early evening - with the lighter winds being over northwest Iowa. Because of this, A Red Flag Warning remains in effect over southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and parts of northwest Iowa from late morning to late evening. Monday and Tuesday will have similar conditions, though winds may be slightly lighter. At the same time, low level moisture will be gradually increasing - most notably on Tuesday when dewpoints rise into the upper 40s to lower 50s. With afternoon RH values again ranging from 15 to 20 percent on Monday, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for the same area above for much of the day into the evening. With the higher dewpoints on Tuesday, yielding afternoon RH of 20 to 30 percent, the fire danger is a bit more uncertain - so no headlines are currently in effect for that day. Of note with regard to the above, the fire danger through the period will vary greatly over a small distances - dependent on the greenness of local vegetation. People are urged to exercise extreme care with respect to outdoor activities that could cause grass fires. Avoid equipment that can cause sparks near dry grass or brush. Do not toss cigarettes on the ground. Report new fires quickly to the nearest fire department or law enforcement office.
