Winds will remain light and variable in areas east of I-29 today, but southeast to south winds will become breezy for areas to the west, with afternoon gusts 20 to 30 mph at times. The locations with stronger winds have generally seen more widespread green-up than areas east of I-29, leading to low fire danger as a broad average across the area. However, any localized areas where the dormant grasses are still more prevalent could see elevated fire danger in response to the gusty winds and humidity levels as low as 20 to 30 percent this afternoon. Similar conditions will be seen on Monday. Humidity levels will increase slightly mid-week with a low (20-30%) chance of spotty light rain in some areas Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored. OUTLOOK FOR MONDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the moderate category. The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native grasses.
