Winds will be light (7 mph or less) and variable through the day. If direction becomes prevailing, would be east to southeast. Lightest winds expected along and west of I-29. Despite relatively efficient mixing, flow aloft is also weak, which may hinder smoke dispersion. Highs today in the 70s to near 80 with RH values dropping to 25-30%. Outside of low (less than 25%) chances of showers and storms along/north of I-90 Friday afternoon and evening, dry weather prevails into early next week. Temperatures continue warming with highs this weekend into Monday in the 80s to near 90. Strong southerly winds gusting to around 40 mph and low RH could lead to areas of critical fire conditions Sunday and at least into Monday. Slightly cooler by mid next week, with low (less than 30%) rain chances returning. The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored. OUTLOOK FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category. The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed. $$
