Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across many of the higher elevations across the West and Intermountain West. Winter Storm Watches are in effect for portions of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. High Wind Warnings and Watches and Wind Advisories are in effect for much of the Plains and Midwest. Red Flag Warnings are in effect from Texas and New Mexico to Iowa and Illinois. The low pressure center was located over eastern Colorado with a minimum central pressure of 980 mb (28.9 in Hg). The system was beginning to occlude and the trailing cold front extended south and west across the Central and Southern Plains into northern Mexico. Additionally, a sharp dry line was analyzed east of the cold front across Central Texas. Observations and National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated moderate to heavy snow was falling over the Rockies while mixed precipitation and rain were expanding into the Plains. Widespread high winds are expected across much of the Central U.S., and high winds and heavy snow could create blizzard conditions in portions of the Dakotas and Minnesota. Winds and wintry precipitation could cause power outages and create hazardous travel conditions. Heavy snow in the Rockies will gradually decrease today, but high winds and blowing snow could still create hazardous conditions through this evening. Additionally, a regional outbreak of severe thunderstorms is likely today across the Mid-Mississippi Valley to the Lower-Mississippi Valley, including portions of the Lower Ohio Valley and Mid South, and the severe weather threat will shift east on Saturday, stretching from the Gulf Coast states to the Ohio Valley.
