Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from

03.4S to 30N, east of 120W including the Gulf of California, and

from the Equator to 30N, between 120W and 140W. The following

information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations,

radar, and meteorological analysis.



Based on 0600 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through

0920 UTC.



...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH...



The monsoon trough extends from the coast of Costa Rica near 

08N83W and continues to 06N92W to 05N100W. The ITCZ stretches 

from 05N100W to 05N124W and beyond 03N140W. Scattered moderate 

to isolated strong convection is observed from 00N to 08N east 

of 101W, and from 06N to 11N between 117W and 126W. 



...OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO...



Weak pressure gradient continues across the Baja California 

offshore waters supporting gentle to moderate NW winds and 

moderate seas there, and light to gentle winds with slight seas 

along the Gulf of California. Moderate NW winds are across the

Jalisco and Michoacan offshore waters, except for locally fresh

to strong off Cabo Corrientes, where seas are 5-6 ft. Light to

gentle winds and slight seas prevail elsewhere.



For the forecast, high pressure will dominate the region over 

the next several days, supporting gentle to moderate N to NW 

winds and slight to moderate seas over the Baja California and SW

Mexican offshore waters through Fri. Moderate to fresh N winds 

in Tehuantepec will diminish today. Otherwise, moderate SW winds 

are forecast at night in the northern Gulf of California through 

Sat as a surface trough developing inland Baja California Norte 

shift eastwards over the Gulf waters. Looking ahead, NW winds 

along the Baja California offshore waters are forecast to freshen

Fri evening through Sat night with locally strong winds ocurring

near the coastal waters N of Cabo San Lazaro. 



...OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, 

AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR...



Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continue to affect

the offshore waters of Panama and Costa Rica. Gusty winds and 

rough seas are likely with the strongest convection near the

Costa Rica and northern Panama coasts. Elsewhere, a strong ridge

over the western Atlantic continues to force fresh to strong 

NE to E winds in the Gulf of Papagayo, reaching downstream to 

88W. Seas in these waters are 5-8 ft. Light to gentle winds and 

moderate seas are ongoing elsewhere.



For the forecast, fresh to strong NE to E winds and moderate 

seas are expected to pulse in the Gulf of Papagayo through Thu. 

Afterward, moderate to fresh winds will pulse through the 

weekend. Moderate winds from this gap event will extend to the 

offshore waters of El Salvador and Guatemala Tue through Thu. In

the Gulf of Panama, moderate to locally fresh NE gap winds are

forecast from Wed night through Sat. Otherwise, light to gentle 

southerly winds are forecast between Ecuador and the Galapagos 

Islands through Sat night, except locally moderate today. 

Looking ahead, southerly swell will reach the southern Galapagos 

Islands Fri night and propagate NE the remainder of the weekend. 

Peak seas will be 8 ft.



...REMAINDER OF THE AREA....



A 1037 mb high pressure system located well north of the 

tropical eastern Pacific continues to affect the basin dynamics,

supporting moderate to fresh NE to E winds from the ITCZ to about  

18N to the west of 120W. Seas over this region are 6-9 ft per a

recent altimeter pass. In the far NW corner, N of 28N and west 

of 132W, winds are moderate from the NE and seas are 7-8 ft in NE

swell. Otherwise, moderate or weaker winds and moderate seas are

prevalent elsewhere. 



For the forecast, moderate to fresh winds will continue across

the tropical Pacific waters W of 115-120W through the forecast 

period, as surface ridging will continue to extend across the 

eastern Pacific subtropical waters. Seas will be moderate to 

rough over these waters. Moderate to fresh NE winds and seas to 8

ft will continue through this morning north of 28N and west of 

130W. Elsewhere north of 20N, gentle to locally moderate NE to E 

winds and moderate seas will prevail, increasing to moderate to 

fresh speeds over the western waters late Fri into Fri evening. 

Looking ahead, southerly swell will support rough seas to 8 ft 

south of 03N from Fri night through Sat.
