Hydrologic Outlook
National Weather Service Jackson MS
540 PM CST Mon Jan 22 2024

...HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING LIKELY THIS WEEK...

Significant rainfall is expected across the area over the next
few days, as a series of storm systems pass through the region.
Warmer air by mid-week will bring in moist air and instability
leading to thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours. In
addition, training storms are expected and will bring steady rain
across some of the same areas.

The heaviest rain is expected between late Tuesday and Friday
with rainfall totals from 2 to 8 inches and isolated higher
amounts. Although the area has been extremely dry and streams
across the region remain low, the ground is hard and dormant, so
there should be plenty of runoff. Minor to moderate flooding is
possible for several of the river systems, including the Upper
Pearl, Big Black, Yazoo, Ouachita, Sunflower, Tombigbee and few
others. Localized flash flooding is also likely, especially in
urban areas.

There is an elevated risk of river flooding and flash flooding
for areas generally northwest of a line from Columbia to Meridian.
Estimated rainfall amounts from 5 to 8 inches with higher amounts
are possible. There is a limited risk for river flooding and flash
flooding along the highway 59 corridor where estimated rainfall
totals from 2 to 5 inches with highers amounts are possible.

There is still some uncertainty in the forecast, so continue to
monitor this evolving flood event. People that live near rivers
and streams or in flood prone areas should initiate their safety
plans.
