...A Gale Warning is in effect for Pago Pago Harbor...
...Strong winds with higher gusts across American Samoa...

Gale conditions are being observed in the harbor area due to a
funneling effect caused by terrain and strong northwesterly winds.
Winds from this direction tend to intensify as they descend
downslope the Fagasa/Pago Pago pass. Numerous reports from the
harbor, including the Disney Cruise ship and Harbor Master, have
observed sustained winds of 30 to 35 knots with higher gusts.
Meanwhile, sustained winds of 15 to 25 knots, gusting up to 35
knots are observed at WSO Pago Pago. This difference in windspeed
is why a Gale Warning is in effect only for the harbor area.

Although a gale warning is specifically for mariners, a wind
advisory is in effect for those on land. Additionally, the South
Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) continues to strengthen through
the week, gale conditions may extend throughout all coastal zones.

We urge the public to continue staying prepared throughout our
hurricane season (November until April) and stay informed with
latest updates from the NWS WSO Pago Pago office via website:
www.weather.gov/ppg or social media @NWSPagoPago. You may also
listen to the NOAA weather radio or call our office at (684)
699-9130 for latest updates.
